Down on Channel Farm – July report

Sunshine and showers have typified the last few weeks, and fortunately we have missed the extreme rainfall central England has endured. This would have damaged cereal and vegetable crops alike, flattening them when they are at such a delicate stage.

Barley, wheat and oats now have sufficient rainfall and yields look promising. Broccoli harvest began on the 3rd July, one day later than last year despite being planted two weeks earlier. Demand is strong with European heatwave and English rainfall causing a short term gap in the market.

Broccoli and potatoes will continue to need sunshine and heat throughout the summer and 15-20mm of rain would be nice… through the night please!
