Channel Farm: Spring report

It feels like a really long winter with us approaching mid-April and vegetables or cereals just planted and the daffodils just coming out now. The positives are a nice cold winter kills off many pests and disease and breaks down the soil making it more friable. The downside is a shorter period to complete all the land-word and sowing before we suffer a yield penalty.

A busy winter of marketing produce has seen all the veg, potatoes, cereals and straw sold in good time. In a surplus year it has been a good strategy to sell local, as these partnerships remain loyal – our potatoes all moved to Branston, Abernethy, Wheat to ABN, Cupar, oats and barley seeds to Harleys, Milnathort and straw to Haywards, Powmill.
